Historical Background on Turkish Cross-border Attacks
Some historical background on Turkish cross-border attacks. On August 15, 1986, the Turkish air force bombed Northern Iraq, killing 100 Iraqi Kurdish civilians and KDP fighters [with the aim to fight the PKK]. In smaller operations in 1987, cross-border bombings wounded many Iraqi Kurds and destroyed the houses. This while the alliance between PKK and KDP ended, after the PKK attacked the Iraqi Communist Party (which was allied with the KDP) in April 1985 [source: Aliza Marcus, "Blood and Belief, the PKK and the Kurdish Fight for Independence", 2007].
