According to recent media reports Turkey edges toward conflict with the PKK. KUNA reported that the Turkish government might approve military operations against the PKK in northern Iraq in retaliation of the killing of 13 Turkish soldiers by the PKK in Silvan. The pro-PKK news agency claims a recent article of Fehmi Koru shows that the Turkish government is discussing the Sri Lanka model to deal with the PKK. Sri Lanka destroyed the LTTE in a huge operations with outside support from China and other countries. Turkey earlier discussed this model. The PKK general Murat Karayilan rejected this comparison. It's true that the island of Sri Lanka cannot be compared to the mountainous geographical region where the PKK-rebels are based in.
Koru discussed possible Turkish-Iranian cooperation against the PKK and the Turkish media was dominated by discussions how to solve the so-called Kurdish issue 'without the PKK'. Like Sinhalese-dominated Sri Lanka government tried to solve it's issue with the Tamil minority 'without the LTTE'. Currently there are ongoing Iranian operations against the PJAK by Iran and the PKK accuses Turkey of working together with Iran, while receiving American intelligence. Furthermore the PKK-media frames the recent news that Turkey will now combat the PKK with police units instead of the army, as a sign of Turkish war plans. The PKK-media sees the article in the Zaman newspaper as a declaration of war. Koru wrote that Turkey is busy with a plan to combat the PKK. The government in Baghdad and the Kurdish government are against the PKK using their territory against their neighbours. Iran has a problem with PJAK and the Syrian president Assad has a interest in cooperation. While Turkey is holding meetings with U.S. officials about the PKK.
Koru asked the question if the recent anti-PJAK operations by Iran could mean the start of a big operation against the PKK. Likely the articles of Koru were just mere speculation and the PKK-media often frames events in conspiracy-like theories. The PKK's leadership KCK recently stated the 'mainstream Turkish press for nationalist writings and publications are clues of an upcoming aggressive term against Kurdish people'. Still the news reports and articles indicate ongoing tensions, Turkish frustration with the PKK and an ongoing hot summer in the region.
